Dedication. What an interesting concept… and in particular it’s something that I hadn’t considered in a long time. What is dedication?
The verb dedicate is defined as, “devoted (time, effort, or oneself) to a particular task or purpose.” Devoted. Another interesting word. To devote, or to be devoted means to “give all or a large part of one’s time or resources.”
Knowing these two definitions brings me back to my original thoughts of just exactly what it means to be dedicated. Weirdly enough, if you are dedicated, you are also devoted. And if you are devoted, you spend most of all of your time on that thing. So, by definition, you can’t be devoted to LOTS of things. Just a few things, or maybe even just one thing.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been devoted to something. I think I’m scared of devotion because it requires commitment. Sometimes I get confused and forget that devotion doesn’t necessarily mean “fun.” It means “work.” Am I just being lazy? I’m not sure. I don’t like to think that I’m lazy – I mean, I do a lot of things. But I guess just doing a lot of things doesn’t really mean that I’m doing anything.
I’m not happy just doing a bunch of stuff. I want to be dedicated. To something. Even if it’s as broad as just being dedicated to being myself. At least it’s a goal, and gives me a standard to hold myself accountable to.
