Sennheiser Momentum

2013 was a year of many changes for me and my family. One of these was a career change to a new job.

In the past, I had been used to work environments that applauded the use of music, and my last boss had had the awesome idea to get our office a stereo system that would literally shake the windows if we turned it up high enough.

My new job shares office space with other types of staff (marketers, developers, sales guys, etc), and out of respect for them, I left my M-Audio desktop speakers at home, and began the search for a pair of nice headphones that I could wear throughout the day.

Now, I’m no audiophile (I like to think that I know music/sound, but I know that many other people know much more that I do), but I knew I didn’t want to drop a few hundred on a pair of Beats. Nothing against Beats- they certainly have their demographic and their marketing efforts are top-notch, but I wanted something a little more well-rounded, literally. After many Google searches, and scrolling through HIFI forums, I found two models that had pretty good reviews and seemed comparable: The Bowers and Wilkins P5, and the Sennheiser Momentum.

Bottom line: I listen to a variety of music; from Aphex Twin to Royksopp, and The National to Kanye West, I needed headphones that were balanced enough for lots of genres. Also, I  usually listen to my music on either my laptop or my iPhone. Portability and comfort are key.

For me, the choice was easy. I’m a big electronic music fan, and one fairly critical reviewer noted that the Momentums had a “punchier” bass than the P5s – nothing too extreme, just a little more pronounced. This sealed the deal for me as I love cranking up the volume and zoning out to a good house song while I’m working.

I ordered off of Amazon, got the product next day for $3.99 shipping and I couldn’t be happier. I hear more things (layers, instruments, effects) than I ever did with my iOS headphones, and the sound feels fuller and brighter. I love it. It’s like rediscovering all of my music all over again. I’m very satisfied with my purchase.
